What I've learned about my husband is that he likes to put up the tent in places where there are natural deterrents for other campers. Then he has to work like a dog to make the area able to support the tent and its inhabitants. Oh well, at least I don't have to put it up myself anymore! Charlie's watching dad and Uncle Paul shovel out the boulders that were in front of the door. Hopefully he learned how to do it the easy way. 7-27-09
Shae got to know the forest real fast and was into her second change of clothing before I even had the van unloaded.
Allen wanted to sleep in a tent all by himself and he got it put up by himself...
Well, almost.
Ta Da!
Charlie got acquainted with all the old fire pits really quickly and I caught him almost to have a seat and play in one. He's hiding his shovel behind his back but his face gives away his intentions.
The first night we had s'mores and then grandma pulled out these huge marshmallows.
The kids were in heaven!
Next morning Charlie helped to get the fire going... and going... and going. 7-28-09
Shae wanted in on the action too.
Allen was our official fire started every morning since he got up first.
Levi was convinced this bucket was really a hat. Got to admit, it looks great and it goes with his shirt!
Shaelynn was my little helper. She helped me make breakfast burritos.
ALL the boys hauled wood for the wood pile. Charlie and Levi didn't want to be left out.
Allen showed Charlie how to get a lot in one trip!
After a long work day the workers cooled off in the stream. (Well, they mostly just played on the bank.)
Daddy made a damn.
"Fire!" (Or "Bi-oh" as Charlie says.)
Charlie finally got in the water that afternoon.
Shaelynn was more interested in snacks.
New day... time to build up the wood pile again! 7-29-09
Charlie was so into it!
I think he wanted to run the saw...
...but he has to settle for carrying the wood foe a few more years.
It was great to get to spend time with my mom, Carma's and Keara's families. I just wish all my siblings could have made it this year. Maybe next time. Thanks for a great time everybody!
He IS getting good at it though!
Time-out for a dull chain!
Shaelynn found an imitation Oreo cookie.
And so did Charlie. This is what he'll look like if he decides to grow out his facial hair later.
Grandma takes a break.
Next morning we went for a little walk and found a cute little meadow. 7-30-09
Charlie was so excited to find all the flowers.
He's into picking them and giving them to mommy right now.
Allen has fond memories of this picture because right after I snapped it he realized he was sitting right in the middle of an ant hill and they were mad! It was a sight to behold. (Of course, I didn't really sit back and do much beholding because I was trying to help get them off of him.)
Levi!
Shae.. Hungry Shae!
See, I have to wear them all day or Charlie will go get me a new one. Shae wanted one too.
"The stick of Levi... (Heard of that one?)
and the "stick of Allen." (Or is it a tomahawk?)
Wanna know how small of a world it is? Our friends from Ajo, Kelly and Dennis, were driving through the forest and went right by our camp. We waved them down and visited with them. They let us borrow their quads for an afternoon and the next morning. Then here's the really unbelievable part... Mom wanted to ride around on one. She said it was to find a place to have girls camp, but I think it's because she has secretly always wanted to have an excuse to ride on one.
Levi got plum tuckered out, cause it's hard work just sitting there!
While we took a break Charlie explored the forest floor and found more flowers.
When we got back to camp I gave Shae a ride too.
That night for a treat we had candy bar burritos.
Anything with chocolate is a hit with us!
Cute, messy girl!
Next morning the addiction became evident. 7-31-09
They wouldn't stay off.
So grandma helped by holding them.
This was the last morning we camped and grandma taught the kids a really cool way to fix bacon, eggs and a biscuit. (It's the way she taught us to do it at 4-H camp.) You roll the biscuit dough into a little "snake" and twist it around the end of a stick. Then you just toast it over the coals like a hot dog. Here is Shaelynn enjoying hers.
The bacon and eggs are cooked over the coals in a paper bag.
First grandma had to trim the bags because they were a little tall.
Then the bacon goes in the bottom of the bag in a "V" shape to cover the most area possible.
Next crack the egg in on top. Be carefull not to break the yolk if you don't want it scrambled.
Oops. This one's scrambled.
Then you just hold it over the coals like a hot dog. Here's my Uncle Lewie demonstrating the proper technique.
And Carma is cooking for the masses (our kids). I was taking pictures, so good thing Carma took care of my kids! Thanks, Carm!
We just put a rock on the end if we weren't holding it.
